What is Durolane?

How Durolane works

Durolane restores the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid depleted by osteoarthritis. The 60 mg of hyaluronic acid (20 mg/mL) are stabilized by NASHA® technology, which keeps cross-linking low while slowing enzymatic breakdown. The result is a joint half-life of about 32 days from a single injection, with no corticosteroid.

Who it is for

Durolane suits people with osteoarthritis of the knee, hip or another synovial joint who want a steroid-free hyaluronic acid treatment in a single session. It is a relevant option when a corticosteroid is not advised, for example with poorly controlled diabetes.

Side effects and safety

The most common reactions are temporary pain, swelling or stiffness in the treated joint, mild to moderate, resolving within a few days. Marked inflammatory reactions are uncommon. Seek care promptly for severe pain, spreading redness or fever.

After the injection

Go easy on the joint for the two days after the injection, avoiding strenuous effort and heavy loads. The lubricating effect builds over two to four weeks and can last several months.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Durolane injection cost in Canada?
At Pharmacli, a Durolane injection costs CA$439, with free shipping across Canada included. The price covers one 3.0 mL pre-filled glass syringe (60 mg of hyaluronic acid), a full course.
Does Durolane contain a steroid?
No. Durolane is a pure hyaluronic acid formulation (sodium hyaluronate) with no corticosteroid. That is the main difference from Cingal, which combines hyaluronic acid and triamcinolone.
How long does Durolane last in the knee?
Durolane's half-life in the knee joint is about 32 days, thanks to NASHA® technology that stabilizes the hyaluronic acid and slows its breakdown. A single injection is given per course.
What is NASHA® technology?
NASHA® (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) is a patented process that stabilizes bacterially derived hyaluronic acid with very little cross-linking. The resulting gel stays in the joint longer than non-stabilized hyaluronic acid.
Can Durolane be used outside the knee?
Outside the United States, Durolane is indicated for osteoarthritis pain in the knee, hip and other synovial joints. The injection is performed by a healthcare professional, with ultrasound guidance for the hip where needed.
Does Durolane require a prescription?
Yes. Durolane is a prescription product given as an intra-articular injection. Pharmacli verifies your prescription before confirming the order and shipping it.
What needle is used for Durolane?
The manufacturer recommends an 18G to 22G needle for the intra-articular injection. The needle is not included in the blister pack; it is supplied by the professional performing the injection.
